Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei martiri In Roman architecture it was the public hall that was a gathering point to accommodate a large crowd of people for business and legal purposes.  It was usually in a rectangular plan ending in an apse with interior colonnades that divided the space.  It was the inspiration for the early Christian churches.
