A large semicircular, often domed recess set back in a wall or colonnade.
A row of columns forming an element of an architectural composition, carrying either a flat-topped entablature or a row of arches.
In Roman architecture it was the public hall that was a gathering point to accommodate a large crowd of people for business and legal purposes. It was usually in a rectangular plan ending in an apse with interior colonnades that divided the space. It was the inspiration for the early Christian churches.
