An architectural element formed by the extrusion of a single curve (or pair of curves, in the case of a pointed barrel vault) along a given distance. The barrel vault is the simplest form of a vault which uses a series of arches placed side by side, one after another. The curves are typically circular in shape, lending a semi-cylindrical appearance to the total design.
An arch applied to a wall. It does not lead anywhere, it is used as a decoration only.
The upper portion of a triumphal arch. It is part of the entablature above the cornice, serving to hide the roof.


Pertaining to construction employing vertical supports and horizontal beams instead of arches or vaults. An example would be Stonehenge.
