The column is basically a representation in stone of the wooden poles used to support light structures such as tents, and sometimes shrines, kiosks or ships.

Columbus Columns-2The Tuscan order is very plain, with a plain shaft, a simple capital and base, and a plain frieze. This is the second of the two types of Roman columns developed. These columns tend to be widely spaced and short in proportion.
